T he Sexual Assault Nurse Examine r (SANE) Program at Cleveland Clinic is staffed by specially trained nurses who care for individuals who have exper ienced or witnessed any type of violence , including sexual assault, child abuse, interpersonal violence, elder abuse or human trafficking. After living through these events, many patients need additional support and encouragement as they cope with the lingering effects of trauma. As an RN on this team, you will provide this essential service, ensuring each person feels safe, comfortable, valued and understood throughout the entire documentation, inves tigation and treatment process.  

A caregiver in this position works varying shifts w/ nights + on call requirements.  

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

• Provide timely and accurate clinical assessment, care, intervention and documentation for patients who have been sexually assaulted or victims of child abuse, elder abuse, interpersonal violence (IPV) or assault.  

• Provide forensic evidence collection and/or photography as requested and maintain chain of custody for such evidence.  

• Develop a safety plan before patient's discharge, providing resources for follow up medical care and referrals for post care support services to the patient.  

• Collaborate with medical and nursing staff, law enforcement, prosecutors, protective services, advocates and other agencies and entities as needed.  

• Participate in an on-call schedule, as determined by SANE coordinator and respond to the designated facility within one hour.  

• Complete clinical experiences as determined by the SANE course and coordinator [ e.g., Civilian observer with Cleveland Police or Cleveland Sex Crimes, Cleveland Rape Crisis Center, Domestic Violence/Child Advocacy Center, Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Family Justice Center (Cleveland), and Courtroom trial experience ] .  

• Perform speculum exams and/or pediatric assessments under the supervision of a LIP.  

• Utilize knowledge of anatomy / body structures , patterns of injur y and collecting and managing of forensic evidence with a Sexual Assault Exam Collection (SAEC) kit and a Drug Facilitated Sexual Assaul t (DFSA) Kit .  

• Travel to other Cleveland Clinic Facilities as needed.  

• Attend continuing education as a S exual A ssault N urse.  

• Provide clear and concise written documentation , photo documentation of injuries and/or evidenc e and court testimony as needed.  

• Participate in community awareness programs and professional organizations.  

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

• C ompletion of a n IAFN approved SANE Adolescent/Adult C ourse within 60 days of hire  

• C ompletion of an IAFN approved SANE Pediatric course within one year of hire  

• Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) 

• Current state licensure as Registered Nurse (RN) 

• One year of recent experience as an RN  

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

• Bachelor ’s of Science in Nursing (BSN) 

• Trauma, Women’s Health or Pediatric experience

Physical Requirements:

• Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly (Constantly: activity or condition exists 2/3 or more of the time) to move objects. Even though the weight lifted may be only a negligible amount, a job should be rated Light Work: (1) when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree; or (2) when it requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls; and/or (3) when the job requires working at a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and/or pulling of materials even though the weight of those materials is negligible.

• Note: The constant stress and strain of maintaining a production rate pace, especially in setting, can be and is physically demanding of a worker even though the amount of force exerted is negligible.

Personal Protective Equipment:

• Gloves, Masks, Gowns as needed.
