Job Summary

City Brewery's Assistant Brewmaster oversees the efficient operation of liquid production in both the Brewing and Batching departments under the direction of the Brewmaster. This individual mentors and coaches teams in both departments across all shifts while using their expertise to identify process improvement opportunities. The Assistant Brewmaster will work closely with new and existing customers to ensure the quality and timeliness of our liquid production aligns with their expectations. As a member of City's leadership team, this role collaborates heavily with other department leaders to promote the team and site’s production and operational goals, including safety and quality. The Irwindale facility is capable of producing up to 5.5 million barrels of beer a year for City's contracted customers.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Schedules brewing according to production requirements, including manpower and maintenance needed
• Mentors and motivates Brewing and Batching employees to ensure best practices are followed and identify training opportunities
• Directs beer movements through the fermentation and storage processes
• Manages yeast availability and quality
• Coordinates beer filtration/finishing to align with packaging schedule
• Schedules blending to meet production requirements
• Develops blending sheets for new products and communicates to team members
• Orders, receives, and routinely inventories raw materials, cleaning supplies and equipment to support scheduled production
• Enters production and product transfers as needed on a daily basis
• Reviews quality data and conducts sensory analysis to guarantee product quality and consistency
• Understands and promotes City’s safety and sanitation practices throughout the Brewing and Batching departments
• Communicates with the Scheduling, Packaging, Quality Assurance and Maintenance departments as needed to promote timely production
• Effectively manages the output of the various stages of the brewing and batching processes, including record keeping and timely communication of results
• Communicates directly with customers regarding department matters, ensuring that customer expectations regarding samples and record keeping are met
• Communicates effectively with other department leaders regarding liquid supply, quality concerns, and production schedules
• Identifies opportunities for process improvement and communicates with all appropriate parties to implement changes as needed

Minimum Qualifications

• B.S. in a related science discipline (Chemistry, Microbiology, Biology, Engineering, etc.) or equivalent
• 4+ years’ experience managing and coaching large teams, preferably in the Brewing industry
• Specialized training in Brewing Science from a recognized Brewing school or equivalent experience
• Proven success in brewing process optimization to deliver consistent quality and cost metrics
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work effectively in a team-centered environment
• Prior experience coaching and motivating large teams through a changing environment
• Working knowledge of the principles of Good Manufacturing Practices
